Steiner’s theorem // Lăcrimând după A L I N A

Steiner’s theorem

Let  be a triangle and  be two points such that . Then the cevians  and  are called isogonic cevians and the following relation holds:

$\frac{BM}{MC}\cdot \frac{BN}{NC}=\frac{AB^2}{AC^2} \tag{S}$
.
REMARK CiP  The correct definition of isogonal cevians is :
Cevians symmetric with respect to the angle bisector of  $\angle BAC$ (green line).
,
If  $\color{Green}{AD}$ is the bisector of angle  $\angle BAC$ , then we have  $\widehat{BAM}=\widehat{DAM}-\widehat{DAB}\;\;\overset{AM,\;AN}{\underset{sym\;wrt\;AD}{=}}\;\;\widehat{DAN}-\widehat{DAC}=\widehat{NAC}$ . This is how we arrive at the equal angles in the usual statements. We note that we could also say that  $AM \;and\; AN$  make equal angles with the sides  $AB \;and \;AC$  of the triangle, respectively, and are similarly placed. That is, both inside, as in most texts, or both outside as we did here ; but NOT one inside and the other outside.
<end REM>

SOLUTION CiP

             We construct the parallelogram  $ABEC$ through parallels  $BD\parallel AC\; and\; CD\parallel AB$. $P\; and\; Q$  note their intersections with  $AM\; and\; AN$.
We have  $\widehat{ABE}=\widehat{ACE}\Rightarrow \widehat{ABP}=180^{\circ}-\widehat{ABE}=180^{\circ}-\widehat{ACE}=\widehat{ACQ}$
so we have similar triangles  $\Delta ABP \sim \Delta ACQ$ (case AA) whence
$\frac{PB}{QC}=\frac{AB}{AC} \tag{1}$
From parallel lines, similar triangles also result :
 $\Delta NQC \sim \Delta NAB\;\;,\;\;\Delta MPB \sim \Delta MAC$
 whence
$\frac{BM}{MC}=\frac{PB}{AC}\;\;\;;\;\;\;\frac{BN}{NC}\frac{AB}{QC} \tag{2}$
So
$\frac{BM}{MC}\cdot \frac{BN}{NC}\overset{(2)}{=}\frac{PB}{AC}\cdot \frac{AB}{QC}=\frac{AB}{AC}\cdot \frac{PB}{QC}\underset{(1)}{=}\frac{AB}{AC}\cdot \frac{AB}{AC}=\frac{AB^2}{AC^2}.$

  1. Let us note that in the case of isotomic cevians (equally distant from the midpoint of the segment $BC$) we have a trivial relationship
    $$\frac{BM}{MC}\cdot \frac{BN}{NC}=1$$

    1. Because, for example, in the order $B-M-D-N-C\; (D\; middle\; BC)$ we have $BD=DC\;and\;MD=DN.$ Hence
      $BM=DM-DB=ND-CD=NC$ and
      $MC=NC-NM=BM-NM=BN$ so
      $\frac{BM}{MC}\cdot \frac{BN}{NC}=\frac{NC}{BN}\cdot \frac{BN}{NC}=1$
